How to Install Double Roller Blinds - Outside Mount
Double roller blinds are typically installed within the window frame for an easy, flush fit. But an outside mount above the frame has its perks too when the view calls for it. Here's how to professionally install double roller blinds with an outside window mount.
Choose Mounting Height Carefully
Assess the room and window dimensions to determine the ideal blind height. Common mounting heights:
Just above frame - Emphasizes window and view
Close to ceiling - Highlights wall space
Higher is better - Allows light above shades
Mark the desired height level on the wall with pencil. Aim to position shades close to ceiling to enable light entry from top. But ensure sufficient room remains for operating chains.
Assess Mounting Surface Structure
The mounting area must be solid enough for securely holding roller shade hardware. Wall studs are best. Use a stud finder to identify strong spots for drilling screws.
If mounting into hollow drywall only, use special drywall anchors rated for the weight of your specific blinds. Hollow wall mounts are risky otherwise. Reinforce with additional bracketry if unsure.
Mark Bracket Locations Evenly
Use the included mounting brackets as templates to map locations evenly spaced across the window width. Center the brackets left-to-right for balanced support.
Double check distance between the edge brackets and window frame. Adjust if needed to ensure operating chains/cords have sufficient clearance without rubbing.
Drill Pilot Holes
Drill slim pilot holes at all bracket markings (studs allow bigger holes). This prevents wood splitting when driving screws. Angle drill slightly upward so screws enter at a slight incline for maximum grip.
Use a level often when marking and drilling to ensure an even installation. Precise pilot holes are key for proper blind operation later.
Install Brackets Leaving a Small Gap
Drive screws firmly into place at each hole, but don't tighten fully flush. Leave a thin 1/8" gap between brackets and wall. This enables easy insertion of the blind headrail.
Use a screw size exceeding 1" depth into studs for strongest hold. For hollow drywall, utilize wall anchor screws meeting shade weight specs.
Insert Power Pack (If Motorized)
For motorized double roller shades, carefully insert the battery-operated power pack into the headrail before mounting. Often a dedicated clip or slot holds the pack securely inside.
Take care protecting any small control boards and wires while inserting to ensure functionality after install.
Mount Blind Headrail
With all hardware firmly installed, mount the double roller blind headrail by tilting it upwards slightly and sliding into place in the bracket lips. The small gap allowed earlier eases this process.
Visually check that both ends secured positively in brackets for maximum stability. Then test functionality!
