How to Install Blinds and Curtains

Installing blinds and curtains is an easy way to add style, privacy and light control to any room. With the right tools and preparation, you can professionally hang blinds and mount curtains in your home. Here is a comprehensive guide to properly installing both window treatments:

Measure Windows

The first step is taking accurate measurements. Use a steel tape measure to measure the exact width across the top, middle and bottom of the window opening. For blinds, order them based on the widest measurement. For curtains, measure the height from the top of the rod to the floor. Add 3 inches for perfect floor-length curtains.

Purchase Hardware

Once you have the window measurements, purchase blinds and curtains in the proper sizes. Also, buy the necessary hardware and mounting brackets. For blinds, opt for easy clip brackets that screw into the window frame. For curtains, sturdy bracket rods that mount into studs work best.

Mark Bracket Locations

Use a pencil and level to mark where to place the mounting brackets for the blinds and curtain rod. Space curtain rod brackets 2-3 inches wider than the window frame. Mark for blind brackets evenly spaced no more than 3 inches from either end.

Install Mounting Brackets

Follow manufacturer instructions to securely install the mounting brackets. For drywall, use screw anchors. For metal or concrete, use self-tapping screws. Ensure brackets are level and anchored into studs for durability. Mount into molding when possible.

Mount Blinds

To install horizontal blinds, tilt the headrail slightly upwards and fit it between the clips. Push up the tilting mechanism to lock the headrail in place. For vertical blinds, set slat carriers onto slats first. Position the headrail between brackets and clip-on carriers.

Attach Curtain Rods

Place finial bases over each curtain rod bracket. Twist to secure the rod. Slide finials onto rod ends for a finished look. For a smooth operation, lubricate rods with silicone spray before hanging curtains.

Hang Curtains and Rings

Drape the curtains over the rod, overlapping them in the center. Evenly space rings along the top, placing one every 4 inches. Push rings out to the edges of the curtains. For floor-length curtains, hem them 1⁄4 inch below the window sill.

Add Tiebacks

Install tieback hooks or holders into the wall about one-third of the way in from the window frame. Clip tieback ropes into place. This keeps curtains held back neatly when opened.

With the proper tools and preparation, installing blinds and curtains is an easy DIY project. Taking careful measurements and using quality hardware will ensure your window treatments fit beautifully and function properly for years.
