How to Hang Blinds and Curtains
Installing window blinds and curtains is an easy DIY project that can make a big impact on the look and feel of a room. With the right tools and a little know-how, you can hang blinds and curtains properly for optimal functionality and visual appeal. Here are some tips for flawlessly hanging window blinds and curtains in your home:
Measure Correctly
The first step is taking accurate measurements so your blinds and curtains will fit the windows properly. Use a steel tape measure to measure the exact width and height of each window opening from inside the window frame. For blinds, take width measurements at the top, center, and bottom of the opening to account for any inconsistencies. Round measurements up to the nearest quarter inch.
Purchase Proper Hardware
Once you know the window dimensions, purchase the blinds and curtains in the proper widths and lengths. Make sure to also get the appropriate mounting brackets and hardware. For curtains, you'll need curtain rods, finials and rings. For blinds, convenient clip brackets are easiest to install. Choose hardware that fits your room's decor.
Install Mounting Brackets
Mark where to place brackets using your measurements and a level. For curtains, place the rod brackets 2-3 inches wider than the window frame on each side. For blinds, position brackets evenly spaced with no more than 3 inches from either end. Use screw anchors for drywall or molding. For metal doors or walls, use self-tapping screws. Follow manufacturer instructions.
Attach Curtain Rod and Rings
After securing the curtain rod brackets, attach the rods by placing the finial base over each bracket and twisting to secure. Slide the finials onto each end. Next, slide the curtain rings onto the rod - the standard is every 4 inches. For a sleek look, get ring clips to pinch the rings shut over the rod.
Mount the Blinds
To mount horizontal blinds, tilt the headrail slightly upwards and position it between brackets. Push the tilting mechanism up and down to lock the headrail into place. Ensure it's centered and level. For vertical blinds, set the carriers onto the vinyl slats, then mount the headrail and clip on carriers.
Hang and Hem Curtains
Drape curtains over the rod, overlapping in the center. Pull to fully extend and pinch any pleats symmetrically. Use binder clips to temporarily hold pleats while hemming. Hem curtains to just above floor or 1⁄4 inch below sill length. Remove clips. Push rings fully to edges to evenly space.
Attach Tiebacks
Use included fasteners to mount tieback holders. Position about one-third the length of the window frame. Clip on tieback ropes. For a quick DIY option without tiebacks, use binder clips on the sides of curtains to hold them back.
With the right preparation and tools, it's simple for anyone to professionally install blinds and curtains. Proper measurement, hardware selection and installation will ensure your window treatments suit your space and function properly.
