How to Shorten Zebra Blinds
Zebra blinds bring a lively pop of pattern to dreary windows. But sometimes pre-made shades arrive slightly too long for the intended window or original measurements were slightly off. Rather than returning ill-fitting zebra blinds, learn how to customize them shorter yourself!
We'll outline key steps for easily shortening both faux wood and real wood zebra blind slats. Tailor the length for a perfect custom window fit.
Assess Blind Hardware
Start by fully lowering the zebra blinds and inspecting hardware condition. If lift cords seem frayed or tension pulleys are cracked, replace components first before shortening. This prevents future operational issues.
Also confirm sufficient extra length exists along the headrail and cords for shortening. Leave hardware intact for remounting.
Remove Excess Slat Length
Faux Wood - These vinyl composite slats are the easiest to shorten. Simply count and mark the number of slats to remove along the bottom. Use scissors or tin snips to cleanly cut through connectors between marked slats.
Real Wood - Carefully detach individual slats starting from the bottom using a flathead screwdriver. Protect remaining slats from scratches. Saw off excess length from removed slats with a miter box and fine tooth blade.
ReattachTrimmed Slats
For faux wood, simply close any gaps by sliding remaining slats down after cutting out shorter sections along the bottom.
For real wood, carefully reinsert trimmed wooden slats into the side channels using pliers, working from the bottom up. Attach new end caps on shortest slats if needed.
Confirm Proper Length
Hold shortened zebra blind up to original window and verify desired length. For outside mounts, ensure adequate overlap past top and bottom of frame. Carefully remount hardware and enjoy the custom fit!
With just a few simple tools and modifications, extra long zebra blinds can be customized shorter rather than replaced. DIY adjustment allows getting the perfect made-to-measure window fit.
