How to Clean PVC Venetian Blinds
Over time, dust and grime can build up on indoor window treatments like venetian blinds. But unlike delicate fabric shades, PVC venetian blinds can be easily cleaned without fear of water damage or shrinking. With minimal time and effort, you can have them looking fresh and new.
In this article, we'll share an effective step-by-step method for deep cleaning PVC venetian blinds using common household supplies. Soon you'll be letting the sunshine gleam through sparkling clean slats once more!
Supplies You'll Need
Before getting started, gather the following cleaning materials:
Soft-bristle brush attachment for vacuum
Dish soap or other mild detergent
Clean spray bottle
Soft sponge or lint-free cloth
Towel
Plastic container or tub large enough to hold the fully-extended blinds
We also recommend wearing rubber gloves to protect your hands and safety goggles during the process. Make sure you have adequate ventilation for where you'll be working.
Vacuum First
The first step is using a vacuum cleaner to suck up surface-level dust and dirt that has settled on the blinds. Use a soft brush attachment and run it slowly over both the front and backside of the blinds from top to bottom.
This prevents loose particles from spreading during the wet cleaning process later on. Pay close attention to crevices along any ridges or engraved lines in the slats.
Mix a Cleaning Solution
Next, mix together your cleaning solution. Fill a clean spray bottle with warm water and add several drops of dish soap. A mild detergent helps cut through grease, grime, and stuck-on dust.
Shake the bottle vigorously until bubbly. The solution can also be mixed up in a plastic container or tub if cleaning the blinds fully immersed.
Spot Cleaning
Before fully submerging, first do some targeted spot cleaning on any particularly dirty marks or stains. Lightly spray solution directly on the spots. Let soak a minute or two. Then use a soft sponge or lint-free cloth to gently blot away the grime. Take care not to rub too hard.
For stubborn spots, allow the solution to penetrate longer before attempting to wipe away. The key is patience and gentle pressure.
Soak the Blinds
Now you're ready for a thorough overall cleaning by fully immersing the blinds. Place your plastic tub in a location where you can fully extend the blinds vertically. Fill the tub with warm water and dish soap mixture.
Slowly lower the entire blind into the solution until fully submerged. Let soak for at least one hour. This allows the solution to penetrate and dissolve built-up dirt and grease.
Rinse and Dry
After soaking, lift the blinds from the tub and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Rinse both sides and along the ridges until the water runs clear and all soapy residue has been washed off.
Gently press out excess moisture with a clean towel. Be sure not to bend or twist the blinds. Simply drape the towel over top and pat dry.
Finally, hang the blinds back in place and let fully air dry before closing or tilting the slats.
Enjoy Crystal Clean Blinds
Giving PVC venetian blinds a good deep cleaning session makes a huge difference in brightening up any room. Not only do clean blinds look better, but they also allow more natural sunlight to shine into your home.
As long as you use mild cleaners and gentle pressure, PVC window treatments can be safely cleaned as often as needed. No more dingy dusty slats blocking your view!
