Crafting Your Own Blackout Roller Blinds at Home

Blackout Materials

Quality custom blinds start with the right ingredients:

Blackout fabrics – Light impenetrable, tightly woven cloth or multilayer fabrics work best. Consider textures for added style.

Dowel rods - For the roller tube. Select a diameter fitting your window width.

Brackets - Mounting hardware designed for your desired install location and dowel size.

Adhesive velcro - Industrial strength velcro joins fabric to rollers.

Tools - Measure tape, fabric scissors, velcro scissors, level, screwdriver and pencil.

With the right materials in hand, let the blind building begin!

Take Precise Measurements

Carefully measure your windows at the top, middle and bottom to ensure a perfect custom fit. Account for obstructions from moldings or window cranks.

Measure the exact area you want your blinds to cover if planning outside mount installation.

Cut Fabric Pieces to Size

Use your measurements to precisely cut fabric to size. Create three pieces:

Main light blocking panel – Cut to exact window dimensions.

Top valance – Cut a six inch tall rectangular strip the window width.

Side pieces – Cut rectangular strips to cover dowel and seam allowances.

Install Rod and Fabric

Affix adhesive velcro strips vertically along the entire dowel rod. Space two to three inches apart. Align the main fabric piece onto the velcro, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles. Wrap side pieces over edges, joining to velcro on backside of dowel. Topstitch all velcro connections for durability.

Now install brackets, insert rod and adjust for smooth, straight rolling function. Enjoy your custom blackout sanctuary and windows made your way!
